Do you apply scalp tonic to wet or dry hair?
A scalp tonic goes on the skin of the scalp, not the hair, so the real question is wet or dry scalp. Most leave-in tonics are applied to a dry or towel-dried scalp rather than a dripping one: water dilutes the product and carries it down the strand, away from the skin it was meant for. Always follow your product's label; some formulas are designed for damp skin.
Why dry or towel-dried
Three practical reasons.
- Dilution. A tonic is dosed in drops. Drops that land in a film of water spread thinner than intended.
- Run-off. Wet hair drips, and the tonic drips with it, onto the neck and the towel.
- Absorption. Skin that is dry to the touch takes a leave-in more evenly than skin that is still wet.
Towel-dried is the middle ground: the hair is damp enough to part easily and the scalp is no longer wet. If the scalp is fully dry, that works too; parting takes a little more care.
Wash day and non-wash day
On a wash day, wash, towel-dry until the hair stops dripping, then part and apply. On a day you do not wash, apply to the dry scalp before bed. In both cases the tonic goes on the skin and stays there.
Does the hair have to be clean?
Not strictly, but a clean scalp is better. Residue from styling products sits between the tonic and the skin. If you use a lot of product during the day, applying the tonic after an evening wash, or on a night when the scalp is clean, gives it a clear surface.
Where the Scalp Tonic fits
The Scalp Tonic goes on the scalp, not the hair: once a day, along the parts, pressed in with the fingertips. Apply it to a dry scalp, or one towel-dried after a wash. Not dripping hair. It balances oil, and leaves the scalp feeling calm and comfortable, with less visible flaking. On skin that is dry to the touch it takes evenly, and the scalp feels cleaner for it.
Questions people ask
Can I apply it right out of the shower?
Towel-dry first. Wait until the hair stops dripping, then part and apply.
Can I blow-dry after applying?
Let the tonic absorb first. A few minutes of pressing is usually enough; then dry and style as usual.
Does it work on a dry scalp if I did not wash?
Yes. A leave-in tonic is made to be applied between washes. Dry is fine.
Should I wet my scalp to spread it?
No. Press it in with your fingertips instead. Pressing spreads a small amount across skin without diluting it.
