Do you rinse out scalp tonic?

No. A scalp tonic is a leave-in. It is applied to the skin of the scalp and stays there until your next wash. Rinsing it off removes the product before it has done its work, the way rinsing off a face serum would.

Leave-in versus rinse-off

Scalp products split into two kinds, and the split is the whole answer.

Rinse-off products are designed to be on the skin for a minute or two and then washed away: shampoos, scalp scrubs, cleansing masks. Their job is to remove something.

Leave-in products are designed to stay: tonics, serums, oils. Their job is to be present on the skin for hours. A tonic is a leave-in by definition. If a product tells you to rinse, it is not a tonic in this sense, whatever the label calls it.

Why leaving it on matters

A leave-in works by contact time. The skin of the scalp renews itself continuously, and the oil gland beside each follicle keeps producing through the day and night. A product that sits on the skin for hours is meeting that skin as it changes; a product that is rinsed after a minute is not. Evening is the suggested time because night is the longest undisturbed stretch the scalp gets.

What about residue?

A well-made tonic is water-based and light, and it absorbs into the skin without leaving anything on the hair. If you feel residue in the morning, one of three things happened: too much was applied, it landed on the hair rather than the skin, or the formula is heavier than a tonic should be. The fix is not rinsing; it is a smaller amount, pressed into the parted scalp.

When does it come off?

At your next wash. Shampoo removes the day's oil, sweat, residue, and whatever remains of the tonic, and the cycle starts again: wash, dry, part, drop, press.

Where the Scalp Tonic fits

The Scalp Tonic is a leave-in in a dropper bottle. Part, drop, press, and leave it. It balances oil, and leaves the scalp feeling calm and comfortable, with less visible flaking. The scalp feels cleaner, and that feeling lasts because the tonic stays.

Questions people ask

Can I rinse it if I applied too much?

You can, but you lose the application. Better to press the excess into the surrounding scalp and use less next time.

Will it stain my pillow?

A light, water-based tonic that has been pressed in until it disappears leaves nothing to transfer. Give it a few minutes before lying down.

Can I shampoo the next morning?

Yes. The tonic has had the night. Wash as usual.

Is a scalp scrub a tonic?

No. A scrub is a rinse-off cleanser. It removes; a tonic stays.
